Witches & Woodlands 3.5

Warning for Umineko Chiru Episode 8 spoiler

Two long years have passed since the day
Witches & Woodlands was released
for the first time.
A lot has happened from back then and
now I'm proud to announce the ultimate
release of this successful fanwork:

Umineko no naku koro ni: Akaki Shinjitsu wa USO DA!!
Witches & Woodlands 3.5

Download the patch from here:

Box: https://www.box.com/s/kidbtcpoaes2y99zwyr9

Or here:

Mediafire: http://www.mediafire.com/download/a5um5fc73dyiv7b/Umineko+USO+DA+-+W%26W+3.5+-+ver+1.0.rar

(leave a comment if the links are broken, I will try to find a solution asap)

Remember that this is only fully compatible with
Umineko no naku koro ni - Episode 8

Now the file is 131 megabyte, so while you wait
for the download to end, please take a bit of your
time to READ this post until the end.
But first, the usual screenshots:

There are two things you need to know about this patch:

The first is that extra music will be available if you
set the directories in a certain way. Two are the conditions for
that to happen:

1) A copy of Umineko EP4 must be installed under the same
directory where your Umineko EP8 main directory is.
2) The main directory of Umineko4, must
be named: "Umineko4".

This has been tested on Windows and on Mac OS.
If you set everything correctly, the last music in the
Music Selection screen will be "Discode" instead of "Byakumu"

Music apart absolutely nothing will change if you can't make this
work for any reasons.

The second thing you need to know is that if you
really, really, really... don't want to replay the whole
main story, you don't have to.

There is a very small, barely visible, button in the bottom
left corner of the main menu. click on it and confirm
your decision, in order to unlock the "????".

No further automatic unlocking is possible, but the "????"
and the "Tea Party" are so short that you can skip
them very quickly using CTRL.

For anything else, please refer to the "Read ME.txt" included
inside the directory of the patch. It's there for a reason.

THIS IS THE ULTIMATE RELEASE
OF WITCHES & WOODLANDS

That means I don't have any projects about creating
new Umineko related content.
However this doesn't mean this will be the last
entry of my blog.

I expect that typo and bugs will be found even after
all the testing and proofreading that has been
done. So I'll probably release a fix in the future.

If you notice any bug, typo, or any kind of odd behavior,
please report it.

Additionally, while I won't work anymore on this project
there are other people that are working to make
Witches & Woodlands an even better experience.

For quite some time Immblueversion has been working on
a voiced patch of Witches & Woodlands.
The work is proceeding slowly but steadily.
As soon as his project is finished I'll make an
announcement on this blog.

I've been contacted by other people each with their own idea.
I'll take this chance to publicly state that I'll give permission
for any kind of project you have in mind. In fact you don't
really need my permission. I'd be an hypocrit if I demanded
that. It's not like I've ever asked any persmission to 07th Expansion...

That being said, it is still my wish that you tell me about
whatever project you are starting regarding
Witches & Woodlands
but that's simply because I'm interested in knowing that.

So if you plan to, for example, translate Witches & Woodlands in
another language, let me know!

Lastly, while I have said that I don't intend to create
any other Umineko related fanwork, that doesn't mean
I won't create anything else in general.

I have really enjoyed creating this Visual Novel and I
plan to create more in the future. I'm still not
sure what I'll end up doing next, but something
surely will come. I'll just be on hiatus for a while
and in the meantime, who knows? Maybe I'll start
doing yonkoma about Higanbana.
That really depends on how much I'll enjoy that,
I'm still waiting for it to be translated.

SUPPORT WITCHES & WOODLANDS!

This project has been realized with the hard
work of many people. All this was done
out of pure passion without any expectation
for any kind of compensation.

But there is still a way for you to show your
appreciation to me and to everyone else that
contributed to render Witches & Woodlands what
it is today: spread the word!

If you really enjoyed this work, then talk about it
to the Umineko community you belong.

Also, you can spend a bit of your time to
register on vndb and vote for Witches & Woodlands
on this page:

http://vndb.org/v5055

Wait after you have unlocked all that you can unlock
and give me your honest opinion, following the site's guidlenes.

This is my only selfish request.

Thank you!

Update on the work in progress

As you are probably aware Chronotrig has recently
announced that the final patch of EP8 will be
relesead somewhere between early and late December
of this year. The release of the final version
of Witches & Woodlands will come shortly
after that. If all goes well it will be between
late December and early January.

The main bulk of the changes and new contents that I
had planned for this final release is basically done.
All the new portraits are finished with the exception
of Fighter Battler who needs a few adjustments.
Etrien is currenly working on it and should be able
to provide the material in a few days.

So I guess it's time to make a list of what has changed, and
what was added, so you can have an idea of what to expect.
I couldn't do this before because I wasn't really sure of how many
of the things I wanted to make could actually be done.

CHANGES
-The three parts of Witches & Woodlands are merged in a
single continuous story now renamed "Witches & Woodlands 3.5"
-Several new portraits have been introduced and replaced existing
ones in the fantasy side and "real" side.
-Right-click menu enhanced providing detailed informations about
the fantasy characters and a few of the "real world" characters.
The menu will update frequently in response to changes inside
the story.
-All dialogues are now enclosed in quotations marks.
-Several adjustments in the script and dialogues are made in
order to: improve clarity about the game rules, adapt to the new
continuous format and new portraits, improve consistency with
in game mechanics and characters' stats.

NEW CONTENTS
-"Ura Tea Party" unlockable after completion of the main story,
(already published on youtube)
-"Tea Party" unlockable after completion of the "Ura Tea Party"
(yes I inverted them). This will be a very short scene where the
characters discuss about the game they have played a few minutes after
its ending. Several matters that have remained unresolved
will be explained.
-TWO "surprises" will be unlocked after completion of the "Tea Party".
I can't tell what they are about because... they are supposed
to be a surprise! Two of them!
-A third minor surprise will be accessible from the two "surprises".
That will be basically a simplified music box linking to almost
all the musics of Umineko (excluding the boring ones).
It will also include the missing musics from EP4 provided
paths are set correctly.

All the new contents are already scripted/programmed.
What's left to do are adjustments in the main story and
the right click menu (which is however at a good point).
Proof reading pending, as it'll have to wait for the EP8 patch first.
You can take a sneak peek from the few images below (click to enlarge).
Stay Tuned!

Unforgivable

Spoiler alert!

The following yonkoma contains
spoilers about Umineko Chiru Episode 8

Yes, this is the last "USO DA" yonkoma, with this the series is completed.
What? Did you expect Bernkastel to say "USO DA" in the last panel?
I'm sorry, the witch of miracles couldn't find any kakera where she'd say
that in the end. She assured me there really isn't any. And who are you to deny that?!

Jokes apart I hope you enjoyed the 60+ yonkoma I made so far and I hope
you enjoyed this one as the fitting, unexpected, closure for this series where
Umineko rules and Higurashi memes collide.

This is however just the last of the "Umineko" yonkoma. Nothing says that
I won't make more, for example about Higanbana or who knows what else.
I won't make promises, but you can still hope. And in the off chance that
"Umineko Rei" will introduce a new character... well it could even be
possible that I'll have to make another Umineko USO DA yonkoma
in the end (I hope not, though...).

About Witches & Woodlands, I have already done practically anything that
I wanted to do. The only things that are missing are the new portraits (which
will require just a few changes in the script) and the right click menu character
TIPS. For both of them I'd rather wait until I have the new art ready.
Currently only Monk George, Paladin Erika and Fallen Paladin Erika and are done.
Fighter Battler is half done and only two more portrait sets are missing.
Etrien is currently working on them and so far he's doing a very good job.
So as of now I'm no longer looking for an artist.

Supposing everything will proceed steadily I expect to finish the job
before Witch Hunt releases their patch or around that time.
However I still wish to release the final product after Umineko is fully translated
because there will be EP8 spoilers, some of them are pretty heavy.

Amnesia

ARIGATOU FOR 556:
a brief summary

"Arigatou for 556" is probably the Umineko related official text that remained
untranslated for the longest time. It isn't even the longest "extra tip" made by
Ryuukishi, it's not even one of the longests, so why nobody provided a translation yet?
Everything became clear to me as soon as I tried to translate it myself, the story
starts with a lot of technical words and technical stuff, it's enough to scare
anyone without a perfect proficiency in japanese, me included.
Therefore I can't really say in confidence that I can provide a reliable summary
of this story; I can only provide what I got from it and that's probably the best
you can get as of now. If you prefer to wait for a full and more reliable translation
skip this page. If you think you can add more insight or correct my summary feel
free to inform me, I'll make the necessary adjustments.

Okay, everything starts with a general description of some national defense ministry
(of the magical world I guess) and their need to possess strong units to defend
against their enemies' attacks.
Who are these enemies? Why are they fighting? That's for you to speculate, not
much is revelead about them. What is it certain is that a few "weapon development"
projects started so to provide units that would satisfy the "3F" requirements:
First look, First shoot, First kill.
The Chiester Corps were designed with this philosophy in mind. They were instantly
dispatched on the battlefield and proved to be extraordinarly efficient weapons.
Among the various Chiesters, 410 distinguished herself as one of the best
snipers but she lacked reliability. Her targeting system being analogical allows
her to see the "gray area" of the battlefield rather then seeing it all as series of "0"
and "1", that is an advantage but at the same time a disadvantage.
To compensate 410's shortcomings, the higher officials decided to pair her with 45,
a Chiester unit specialized in acquiring multiple targets' positions and sending the
data to other units via data-link. 45's targeting system is digital and therefore very
precise, but it's no capable of seeing anything in between a "0" and a "1".
This improbable pair proved to be extremely efficient and became the strongest
among the Chiester Corps, receiving many accolades and scoring the highest
kill rate in the battlefield. However the merit of this exceptional performance
seemed to be attributed to the sole 410 who physically shot the arrows. In truth
410 used 45's data to pinpoint with accuracy her targets but then used her analogical
functions to adjust her aim with even more precision. 410 mischievously made fun
of 45's inability to read the gray area and this led the latter to believe herself
to be useless and only a hindrance to 410's natural talents.
Chiester 00, the squad leader, noticed this, and once asked 410 why she didn't
recognize the fact that without 45's support her battle performance wouldn't
be as good. But 410 surprised her by stating that she was actually very
grateful to 45. 410 has always been well aware that she needed 45's inputs
and she considered her her irreplaceable partner.
So Chiester 00 asked her why she never thanked 45, why she kept making
her believe that she's useless and nothing more than a liability?
410 responded that she'd never go out and say something so embarrassing.
She said that she considered 45 her partner and that was all that mattered,
words were unnecessary.
Some time later, the higher officials decided to add to the already exceptional
group a newly devoloped unit to cover the squad's weak point: short range battle.
Chiester 556 was developed with this purpose in mind and she was meant
to act as the ultimate line of defense to protect her comrades from those
foes that would get too near. Chiester 556's bow was bulky and unelegant, but
possessed a tremendous power. Her new companions soon realized her potential
during a mock up battle against dummy targets. 45 provided the information
regarding the targets' positions and 556 destroyed all of them in a single volley.
Everyone remained speechless in front of such awe-inspiring performance, but
the proud and mischievous 410 refused to acknowledge that. Rather she
tried to enrage 556 by making caustic comments about the lack of elegance
of her bow. However 556 had an extremely laid back nature and she simply
accepted the critiques with a smile. 556 thanked 45 for providing the data
and thanked 410 for being so straightforward. 410 commented that all she could say
was "thank you", "thank you" and she decided to nickname her "thank you bunny".
556 replied by saying she was happy to receive a nickname so early and once
again she thanked 410.
Needless to say 410 wasn't pleased to see her attacks being deflected that easily
and before leaving with 45 commented that she really doesn't like people like 556.
Once alone Chiester 00 inquired on the new recruit's strange habit to thank
everyone for every small thing. She asked why she felt the need to repeat
that over and over. 556 answered by telling her that she knows that the
destiny of a soldier is to die in battle. She decided to never fail to thank all of
her comrades so to never regret it later. Because once "they" are dead or "you" are dead
there's no way to talk and convey those feelings anymore. That's why 556 made
a vow to always thank everyone around her.
Chiester 00 was impressed by 556's profound thoughts but she thought it was very sad.
When 556 was about to thank her too, 00 remembered her position as a leader
and begun talking like a true drill sergeant should. She dismissed 556's words of
gratitude by saying they were unnecessary. As the squad leader she claimed that she'd
never allow anyone under her command to die. She added that it was shameless
to have that kind of attitude in the first place and she promised to beat 556 into shape
soon, then she officially welcomed her in the squad.
556 understood 00's feelings and with a smiling face she thanked her (anyway).
The story ends with this sentence:
"Starting from that day, that group of four became Lady Maria's personal escort."

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT

Okay people, it's been a long time since my last post, but the truth is I have already
done all the remaining USO DA yonkoma for a while. In my original plans I wanted
to wait until the full translation of EP8, but I decided to start anyway.

This is the first and fortunately it only spoils events that have been
already translated in the current Witch Hunt patch, so it's all right.
Next week, however, there will be a yonkoma about a character that only
appears in "Tsubasa" and in one of the two still untranslated stories no less...
I think I'll just provide a short summary of that one, so you can get the
general idea; without that you won't really appreciate the joke.
The week after, the yonkoma will be about a very HUGE SPOILER that you
learn at the very end of EP8. That can't be helped. I'm sorry for those
who still haven't read EP8 and somehow managed to not spoil themselves
already, but I'm going to post it anyway.
Finally it'll be the time for the elusive Bernkastel's yonkoma and that
will definitely close the series once and for all! Please don't be sad...
I'm not even sure if I should tag that as an EP8 spoiler or not...
Its content could be seen as a spoiler by some... but even then it'd be very minor.

Now let's talk about more important stuff.
For the past months I've been working on a new polished release of W&W.
This new release will include a lot of new small contents, but I'm not
going to ruin you the surprise. Or that's what I'd like to say because
circumstances give me no choice but to spoil at least one of them.
Well... images work better than a thousand words so have a look
at these:

That's right! New artwork! What you've just seen are Paladin Erika and
Fighter Battler. The artist who made them is Genji from seacats.
Unfortunately I still need more: Monk George and Rogue Jessica at the very least.
This is why I'm making this announcement: I need an artist who can finish the job.
I posted the two pictures above so you can have a general idea of the quality I'm
expecting. I need the new artworks to be as close as possible as the
originals. Only bodies are necessary, the heads will be copypasted over them.
If you think you can take the job or you know someone who might, please
contact me. Do not start drawing already, there's a lot of things that I must
tell you first about how I need the new art to be done.

It's a very short job! I need the new art... I can't finish my job without it...
And if I can't finish my job, you won't get the new shiny release! Come on!
I'm getting desperate here...
(still won't accept your artworks if they are too different from Ryuukishi's style)
